5 signs your website is scaring customers away

Visitors form an opinion about your site in 0.05 seconds. If any of these five signs are there — you're losing business before you even get to introduce yourself.

5 signs your website is scaring customers away

Research from Missouri University of Science and Technology shows that people form an opinion about a website in 50 milliseconds. That's faster than you can blink. If the site looks old, broken or untrustworthy — you're already gone. Here are the five signs that make a visitor back out fastest.

1. The site isn't mobile-friendly

Fact: 63% of all web traffic comes from mobile. If your site requires zooming, has buttons too small to tap, or text that flows off the screen — you miss 6 out of 10 visitors straight away.

Test it: open the site on your phone. If you have to zoom in to read anything, that's a problem. If the menu doesn't work with a finger tap, that's a problem.

2. Load time over 3 seconds

We wrote an entire post about this, but briefly: 40–53% leave a site that takes more than 3 seconds. If your site loads in 5–7 seconds (typical for older WordPress with many plugins), you lose half your visitors before they've even seen your logo.

Test it: run your URL through Google PageSpeed Insights. Under 50 points = emergency.

3. No clear contact options

If a visitor doesn't see a phone number, email or contact form within 5 seconds — they leave. Contact information should be in the header, footer and on every page. On mobile, the phone number should be tappable so you can call with one touch.

Bonus problem: if your contact form doesn't work (sends to a mailbox nobody checks), that's worse than having no form at all. Try sending yourself an email via the form right now.

4. No trust signals

This is where many small businesses fall down. The visitor wants to know you're a real business that actually delivers. If the site lacks:

- Customer quotes or reviews — ideally with names and photos

- Photos of you/your work — not just stock images

- About page with faces and a story

- Company registration number and address — visible in the footer

- SSL certificate (the padlock in the address bar)

...then the site looks like a spam page. Six out of ten visitors check the 'About' page before getting in touch. If it's missing or empty — you lose them.

5. The design looks like 2015

You recognise it instantly: centred text blocks on a white background, ClipArt icons, gradients that look like Word 2003, Comic Sans in the menu, image carousels rotating too fast. It signals: 'we don't care about details'. And if you don't care about your own site — do you care about the client's project?

Modern design doesn't mean flashy or complicated. It means clean typography, clear hierarchy, straightforward navigation, fast response to clicks.

How many of the five hit you?

Most sites we review have at least 3 of the 5 problems. Each point that applies is a percentage of customers you lose every month.
